Class Information
Come play with clay! Woodlawn Pottery Studio offers multi-stream, mixed-level courses. Each course teaches foundational hand-building and wheel throwing techniques which may be applied to both functional and sculptural forms. Classes offer a flexible curriculum to accommodate adult potters of all levels. Class size is restricted to ensure individual attention.
Cost for 8 weeks (3hr sessions) is $570.65 incl. HST and 5 kg clay
Please note: if a student must miss a class, we are unable to offer makeup class time.
Beginner Stream
The Beginner stream is for people new (or newish) to clay. Students will focus on material exploration, experimenting with the core techniques in clay: pinching, coiling, slab-rolling and building, wheel throwing and trimming, and glazing. Demos and hands-on activities will give everyone a chance to explore processes and develop a small number of take-home products.
Intermediate Stream
The Intermediate stream is for people familiar with clay who want to develop their technique and their skill repertoire. Intermediate students generally work independently on projects of their own choosing, supported by demos, exercises, and instruction as needed. Intermediate students often explore new forms and surface decoration (e.g., coloured slips, texture, glazing techniques) and have a chance to refine their work.

Instructor Bios:
Danica Drago is an interdisciplinary artist and arts facilitator based in Toronto. Through the creation of functional, sculptural, and wearable forms in ceramic, metal, and various material outcomes, Danica's practice as a tool and object maker is drawn towards investigating their own embodied experiences of trans/gender expansiveness, collaborative acts of making as divergent knowledge-sharing, and process-driven material exploration. Danica’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and they have led an active studio-based teaching practice in ceramics for the past seven years; working with youth and adults at the Gardiner Museum, Jewish Community Centre, Harbourfront Centre, and local ceramic studios across the GTA. They have also facilitated site-specific clay and tool-making workshops with artist-run centres and community organizations in public parks, libraries, schools, streets and rooftops. They are a recent Ceramics Studio alumni of the Craft & Design Artist-in-Residence program at Harbourfront Centre.
Karin was born and grew up in Toronto. She began her ceramic studies in Sweden and is a graduate of both Sheridan College and the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design where she received a BFA. She was a ceramic instructor for many years at the Gardiner Museum. In addition, she has taught at Sheridan College, the ROM, Avenue Road School of the Arts and the Toronto District School Board. She currently works in her Toronto west end studio and teaches part time at the Woodlawn Studio. Karin is an established and respected Canadian potter whose colourful tableware has been exhibited in North America and Europe. She has been the recipient of many awards and honours, including grants from the Ontario Arts Council, and her work has been showcased extensively in both public and private collections. Karin travels frequently to Europe, where she continues to draw inspiration for her work.
