Me artistic!!...............Ha!! I wouldn't say that at all but do I love playing with clay.
In my day job I measure, I record facts, I draw conclusions based on facts. My world is full of exact and undeniable scientific and mathematical facts. It has no room for errors. But here I am in a Pottery Studio where nothing is guaranteed or exact what a contrast! I want my work to catch your eye and draw you in. Touch it, pick it up, turn it over, look at the colours, the shape, and the texture. I want it to be a hands on experience. Pottery has so many variables it is mind boggling. What you see here is a result of experiments with different clay bodies, glazes, textures, shapes. I start working on sensible pieces and something about it reminds me of something, a place or country I have visited. My mind drifts...... and a metamorphosis takes place. It is exciting and I want to keep working on it. I can’t wait for it to be finished. Who knows what I will create ? I just let inspiration lead the way I am still in an experimental stage....yes even after 20 years the experiments continue as does the inspiration. My current inspiration is Joyce Wheatley who at 93 is teaching me pottery skills and techniques she has learned by trial and error. She is an Ikebana Master. Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. It uses unusual containers according to strict rules. I love making these containers because they can be so tactile, earthy and creative.....the metamorphosis continues... You may not wish to own my pottery, that is OK. Please feel free to enjoy it…… or gift it to someone who will love it.... |
